What are the admission requirements at King Saud University?

King Saud University in Riyadh is the oldest university in the Kingdom and offers 90 bachelor programmes in 22 colleges, three of them applied colleges in Al-Muzahmiyah, from medicine, dentistry, engineering and computing to languages, arts, law and tourism. Admission runs through the national unified admission platform and goes straight into the programme, weighted 30% secondary grade, 30% Qudrat and 40% Tahsili. Here are all the majors by college, the admission rules as the university writes them, the academic-excellence programmes and their terms, and transferring in from another university.

KSU publishes the following admission rules2, which we carry over as the official page states them:

  • You must be Saudi, the child of a Saudi mother, or the mother of Saudi children.
  • You need the general secondary certificate or its equivalent; a certificate from outside the Kingdom must be recognised by the Ministry of Education.
  • For medicine your secondary certificate must be no more than two years old (this year and last), and no more than five years old for every other programme.
  • You need valid General Aptitude (Qudrat) and Achievement (Tahsili) scores from the National Center for Assessment.
  • You must be medically fit and able to complete the programme requirements.
  • All health colleges (medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, emergency medical services, applied medical sciences, nursing) require that you have no disability.
  • Candidates for medicine and dentistry must pass a personal interview, and candidates for architecture and planning a written test.
  • If you withdrew, were struck off or stopped attending, you cannot be readmitted until four semesters have passed.
  • You must not have been dismissed from this or any other university for disciplinary or academic reasons.
  • You must not be enrolled full time at another university inside or outside the Kingdom.
  • You must not already hold a bachelor degree.
  • Students with disabilities who are exempt from the national tests can be admitted to a humanities programme suited to the disability.

What do you study in each KSU programme?

From each programme page on the KSU site we carried over the description, the length, the way it is taught and the careers the university lists:

Medicine and Surgery: Medicine and surgery is an academic-excellence programme: you need a weighted score of at least 95% to apply, then a GPA of at least 4.5 out of 5 in the first common year courses to stay. You must also pass a personal interview, and your secondary certificate must be no more than two years old.2

Careers the university lists: Hospitals, Residency and specialty training, Medical research.

Computer Science: Computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, information systems and information technology are all academic-excellence programmes: a weighted score of at least 90% to apply, and a GPA of at least 4 out of 5 in the first year to stay. Computer engineering is for men only and information technology for women only.2

Electrical Engineering: Electrical, mechanical and industrial engineering are academic-excellence programmes on the same terms: 90% to apply and 4 out of 5 in the first year. If you miss the GPA you are moved to another programme based on your record.2

General Dentistry: General dentistry is open to men and women, requires a personal interview for candidates, and like every health college does not admit applicants with a disability.2

Architecture and Building Sciences: Architecture and building sciences and urban planning and design are open to men and women, and candidates for the College of Architecture and Planning sit a written test before admission.2

Midwifery: Midwifery at the nursing college is for women only, while general nursing is open to men and women.2

Does King Saud University still have a common first year?

The university no longer admits you to a general track and assigns a major a year later. Admission is now direct to the programme you choose, and in your first year you take the common first-year courses of your college. You know your major from the day you are admitted.3

The admission criterion for programmes is: secondary grade 30%, Qudrat 30%, Tahsili 40%. Health, science, engineering and computing colleges accept the general, computer science and engineering, and health and life secondary tracks, and the business college also accepts the business track.3

What do academic-excellence students get at King Saud University?

If you are admitted to medicine, electrical, mechanical or industrial engineering, or one of the five computing programmes, you get priority in the gifted and apprenticeship track, priority for student jobs if you want to work, and priority for campus housing and its parking if you are from outside Riyadh, subject to vacancies.2

Which programmes are for men only or women only?

Most programmes take men and women. Women only: pre-primary education, midwifery and information technology. Men only: Spanish and Japanese with translation, civil engineering, operations research, zoology, geology, computer engineering, every programme in the College of Food and Agricultural Sciences, and every programme at the applied colleges in Al-Muzahmiyah.2

How do I transfer to King Saud University from another university?

Transfers from outside open once a year, mid-year, through the academic system portal, and are not available into medicine or dentistry. You need at least 45 credit units passed full time at your university, and to meet the admission score for the programme you want.4

You must take at least 60% of the bachelor credit units at King Saud University, so only part of your earlier study can be credited. Prepare a copy of your ID, your reasons for transferring, your secondary certificate, an official stamped transcript, and your Qudrat and Tahsili results.4

Tahsili carries 40% of your score for every programme, so it is the test to prepare for most. If you are aiming for medicine, do not wait: your secondary certificate must be no more than two years old, and the first year needs 4.5 out of 5 to stay.

How much is the King Saud University stipend?

KSU pays a monthly stipend that depends on the type of major5: SR 1,000 a month (monthly stipend, scientific majors), SR 850 a month (monthly stipend, humanities majors) and SR 900 a month (monthly stipend, graduate students).

The stipend compared across eight universities, with pay day and the IBAN steps, is in the student stipend guide.

Campus housing has its own page: the residence conditions, how to apply and the housing rules, on the KSU housing page.
