What are the admission requirements at Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University?

Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University (PMU) is a private university in Khobar that teaches in English. It offers 21 bachelor programmes in 6 colleges, from architecture, engineering, computer science and artificial intelligence to business administration, law and medicine. Here are the majors by college, the general and major-specific admission requirements, and the tuition fees, as published on the university's official pages.

PMU publishes the following admission rules4, which we carry over as the official page states them:

  • The general minimum is a secondary GPA of 80% or equivalent and Qudrat of 60% or the SAT 1 equivalent.
  • You can apply with lower scores; acceptance then depends on a combined score of 60% secondary school and 40% Qudrat.
  • For direct entry to the major without the preparatory year you need an Academic IELTS of 6.0 overall and 5.5 in writing, or the TOEFL iBT equivalent.
  • The application fee is 950 riyals including VAT, non-refundable.
  • After reviewing your documents the admissions office sets an interview appointment, then tells you the final decision.
  • If you are employed you need a no-objection letter from your employer.

These are the admission conditions for each major or college4: the high-school track, the weighting of the score, the minimum, and whatever else is asked.

Why do computer science, engineering and architecture at PMU ask for higher scores?

Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University has general admission requirements, then higher ones for seven majors: architecture, computer science, computer engineering, software engineering, and mechanical, electrical and civil engineering. For these majors Tahsili enters the formula, which becomes 40% secondary school, 30% Qudrat and 30% Tahsili, with a minimum of 85% in secondary school and 65 in both Qudrat and Tahsili.5

Students with lower marks can still apply, as long as they reach the minimum weighted total set by the admissions office. Business, law, information technology, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity follow the general requirements: 80% in secondary school and 60 in Qudrat.5

Do I take the preparatory year at PMU?

Teaching at PMU is in English, so your English test result decides whether you start with the preparatory programme or enter the major directly. The preparatory programme builds English, mathematics and learning skills, and you enter it on the same general requirements plus the PMU English placement test or a recognised language certificate, and a personal interview with the admissions office.6

If you hold an Academic IELTS of 6.0 overall and 5.5 in writing you can apply for direct admission and skip the preparatory programme. Note that the preparatory programme has its own semester fee.6

How does admission to the PMU College of Medicine work?

The PMU medicine curriculum is seven years and combines the American model with the Saudi medical school structure. The admission score is 60% weighted score and 40% personal interview. The weighted score itself is 20% secondary school, 40% Qudrat and 40% Tahsili, with a minimum of 86.7

The university asks for a secondary certificate at 95% and 80 in both Qudrat and Tahsili, or the SAT equivalent. The admission page gives an application fee of 1,000 riyals while the fee page gives 1,150 riyals for medicine, so confirm the amount when you apply.7

How much does Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University cost?

Fees for full-time students are per semester and cover 12 to 18 credit hours: 32,500 riyals for architecture and design, computer engineering and science, and engineering, and 30,000 riyals for business administration and law, and 30,000 riyals for the preparatory programme. Hours beyond 18 are charged per hour.2

Saudi students pay no VAT on tuition; the 15% VAT applies to other fees only. Non-Saudi students pay VAT on tuition and other fees.2

Which PMU majors are open to male and female students?

Every PMU bachelor programme is open to both male and female students except interior design, which is for women only. That includes all four engineering programmes, computer science and computer engineering, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and law.3

If you are aiming for computer science or engineering at PMU, prepare for Tahsili; if you want direct entry, start on IELTS early, because each preparatory semester adds 30,000 riyals to your cost.
