By the tiswa editorial team, from the official sources listed at the end of this guide. How we write our guides
The aerospace engineering major in Saudi Arabia teaches how aircraft, spacecraft and drones are designed: how they fly, how their structures carry loads, how engines push them and how they are controlled. Before going further, one common mix-up: this is an engineering degree, and it does not train pilots. Learning to fly is a completely different path with its own bodies and requirements. This guide explains the engineering major from official sources: length, courses, admission, training, jobs and professional accreditation.
How many years is aerospace engineering?
At KFUPM, the BS in Aerospace Engineering is in the College of Engineering and Physics. It runs four years after a required preparatory year, with 129 credit hours, and it is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. It comes with a summer training option and an internship option. The bulletin states that every aerospace engineering student must spend eight weeks in summer training. Other Saudi universities offer aeronautical or aviation engineering programmes under different names, so compare the plans before you apply. To begin, read the preparatory year guide.
Aerospace engineering courses
These courses come from the official KFUPM plan:
| Course | What you learn |
|---|---|
| Introduction to aerospace engineering | An overview of the aircraft, its parts and systems |
| Fundamentals of thermo-fluids and fluids lab | Energy and the motion of air and liquids |
| Intro to aerospace structures and materials | Light, strong materials and how they behave |
| Systems and control and lab | Feedback and stability in systems |
| Gas dynamics | High-speed airflow and shock waves |
| Flight structures and structures lab | Analysing wings and fuselage under load |
| Aerodynamics | Lift, drag and wing design |
| Computer aided engineering lab | Simulation and design with engineering software |
| Flight propulsion and aero-propulsion lab | Jet engines and their performance |
| Flight dynamics | How an aircraft moves and stays stable in the air |
| Aerospace vehicle design | Designing a complete aircraft from requirements to final shape |
| Senior design project I and II | A design and build or simulation project over two semesters |

Before these, you take foundations shared with mechanical engineering, such as statics, dynamics and advanced maths. That is why many students compare the two majors. The difference is that aerospace goes deep into air, lightness and speed.
Admission to aerospace engineering
Admission for Saudi students at public universities rests on a weighted percentage combining the secondary school grade, the General Aptitude Test and the Achievement Test. The KSU admissions office says all Saudi applicants must take both tests, and its academic excellence programmes in engineering require a weighted score of at least 90%. At most universities the department is set after the first year by GPA and preference, so your first-year GPA is what decides it. Read how to raise your GPA before you start.
Is aerospace engineering right for you?
- Your passion for aircraft and space is real, not just admiration for how they look.
- You like maths and physics, especially fluids and mechanics.
- You are comfortable with coding and simulation, a big part of modern design.
- You are precise, because the margin for error in aviation is very small.
- You are ready to build strong technical English, since industry references are in English.
Aerospace engineering jobs
- Design and analysis engineer: structures or aerodynamics at aerospace manufacturers.
- Maintenance and reliability engineer: airworthiness and maintenance programmes at airlines and MRO companies.
- Engines and propulsion engineer: engine performance and maintenance.
- Drone systems engineer: design, operation and testing.
- Defence systems engineer in the military industries sector.
- Flight test and flight data analysis engineer.
Skills that set you apart
An aerospace degree opens the door, but the skills you build alongside it are what make your CV stand out. These are the main ones, based on the courses in the plan:
- Python or MATLAB for test data analysis and simulation.
- A 3D CAD program and the ability to read working drawings.
- Basics of finite element analysis and computational fluid dynamics, everyday tools in design.
- Clear technical reports in English with proper references.
- Working in a multidisciplinary team, since an aircraft combines mechanics, electronics and software.
Prepare a student CV that shows your senior project and any student team project, with clear numbers and results.
The required summer training is your chance to step into a hangar, a maintenance centre or a manufacturer. Start looking for placements early, and read the co-op training guide and summer training.
Professional accreditation
Aerospace engineering graduates need professional accreditation from the Saudi Council of Engineers to practise as engineers. The SCE offers immediate accreditation to holders of a bachelor's in an engineering programme from a university or engineering college accredited by the Ministry of Education, verifying the degree electronically. Classification has four grades: engineer, associate, professional and consultant, and according to the SCE page the first grade requires the bachelor's and passing the fundamentals exam (FE). Some airline maintenance roles may need extra licences or qualifications set by the relevant authority, so ask about them during your training.
How to study aerospace engineering
- Lock in fluids and thermodynamics
Aerodynamics, propulsion and gas dynamics all build on them.
- Learn Python or MATLAB early
Computer labs and design work need coding. Start with how to learn programming from scratch.
- Learn a CAD program
Vehicle design and the senior project need 3D modelling. See AutoCAD free for students.
- Tie each equation to the aircraft
When you study lift and drag, think about what happens to the wing as altitude or speed changes.
- Join a student team
Student drone or rocketry teams give you real design, build and test experience.
- Read technical reports in English
Get used to industry language now, and build it with English for university.

I am an aerospace engineering student studying [lift coefficient and angle of attack]. Explain it at three levels: first with a simple analogy, then with the core equation and what each symbol means, then with a small numerical example. After that, ask me three questions of rising difficulty to check I understood, and do not give the answers until I reply.
