By the tiswa editorial team, from the official sources listed at the end of this guide. How we write our guides
The first academic warning (إنذار أكاديمي) usually lands as a short notice in the student portal after results come out, and many students read it as a dismissal. The number behind it is close to identical across public universities: a cumulative GPA under 2.00 out of 5.1 What happens next is not. So we compare three official sources: the Jouf University regulation, the King Saud University Deanship of Admission and Registration, and Imam Mohammad Ibn Saud Islamic University.
What is academic probation at a Saudi university?
It is an official notice sent to a student whose cumulative GPA has fallen below the minimum in the regulation.2 It changes none of your grades and does not stop you registering. It starts a counter, though. Every semester that ends with your cumulative GPA under the line adds another warning.
The regulation sets the lowest graduating grade at Pass (مقبول), which starts at 2.00 out of 5. A programme can demand more, on the college council's recommendation and with the university council's approval.1 A student in a programme that requires 2.50 to graduate can be warned while sitting at 2.30. Check the number in your own study plan first.
| Overall rating | Out of 5 | Out of 4 |
|---|---|---|
| Excellent | 4.50 and above | 3.50 and above |
| Very good | 3.75 to under 4.50 | 2.75 to under 3.50 |
| Good | 2.75 to under 3.75 | 1.75 to under 2.75 |
| Pass | 2.00 to under 2.75 | 1.00 to under 1.75 |

Where do the probation rules come from?
From the undergraduate study and examinations regulation, a shared framework public universities apply, plus executive rules that each university council approves to fill in the numbers and deadlines. That is why the line is the same everywhere while the extra chances differ. Jouf publishes the regulation and its executive rules in one file,1 King Abdulaziz University publishes its executive rules as a separate document,5 and the KSU deanship explains dismissal and extra chances on their own pages.2
How long does it take to go from a first warning to dismissal?
Three semesters in the semester system. The cumulative GPA is reviewed at the end of every semester, and Imam University spells it out: a GPA under 2.00 for three consecutive semesters puts a student at risk of having their record closed and being dismissed.4 On a calendar, a first warning after fall, a second after spring and a third after the next fall. Roughly a year and a half.
Are you dismissed after the third academic warning?
Yes, in the semester system, unless the university grants an extra chance. Jouf's regulation dismisses a student after three consecutive warnings in the semester system and two in the annual system.1 At King Saud University a student is dismissed after at most three consecutive warnings, and the university council, on the college council's recommendation, can give a fourth chance to a student who can raise the GPA with the courses available.2
"Consecutive" is the word students miss. One semester that ends above the line breaks the chain. There is also a second ground for dismissal unrelated to GPA: not finishing graduation requirements within the maximum period, which the regulation sets at the programme's length plus half of it again.1 A four-year programme therefore has a six-year ceiling.
What is the fourth chance at KSU and other universities?
| University | Chance after the warnings | Condition on the official page |
|---|---|---|
| King Saud University | A fourth chance, requested online | You can reach your college's graduation GPA by earning 48 points from 12 units; the dean decides within 3 working days3 |
| King Saud University | An exceptional chance of up to two semesters | A reason for struggling that the college council accepts, and better results in the last two semesters2 |
| Jouf University | A fourth chance, then a fifth | The fourth if 12 units can get you to the required GPA; the fifth needs, among other things, a last semester GPA of at least 3.75 out of 5; requests within four semesters1 |
| Imam University | A fourth chance | One semester of at least 18 hours4 |
The KSU number deserves a second look. 48 points from 12 units is a 4.00 out of 5 average on those units, well above Good. Requesting the chance without checking whether you can actually score that means asking for a semester that will not be enough. At KSU, if the dean has not decided within the three working days, the chance is granted automatically.3 Students at King Saud University file the request through the deanship's online portal.
Does an academic warning affect your GPA?
No. The warning is a result of a low GPA, not a penalty taken off it. It does have effects elsewhere. At Imam University a student cannot transfer to another department after the third warning, and a warning rules out first and second class honours.4 At Jouf the maximum course load drops to 14 units for a GPA under 2.1 The monthly stipend follows each university's own conditions, covered in the student stipend guide.
How do I calculate the grades needed to raise my GPA off probation?
You need two numbers from your transcript: your cumulative GPA and your counted hours. The example is a student at 1.85 after 45 hours who registers 15 hours:
- Find your current points
Multiply GPA by counted hours: 1.85 × 45 = 83.25 points.
- Find the points you need
Add next semester's hours and multiply by the line: (45 + 15) × 2.00 = 120 points.
- Subtract
This semester needs 120 − 83.25 = 36.75 points.
- Divide by the semester's hours
36.75 ÷ 15 = 2.45 out of 5. Any semester at 2.45 or better puts you over the line.
- Spread the target across courses
Give each course a grade you can really reach, and start with the course you failed if your university replaces the grade on a repeat.

Had the same student waited until 90 hours at the same GPA, a 15-hour semester would need about 2.90 to get there. Accumulated hours weigh the average down. If the arithmetic is new, how to calculate GPA starts from zero, and how one semester moves your cumulative GPA shows why it gets harder in fourth year.
What mistakes keep students on probation longer?
- Registering a full load in the warning semester because friends did.
- Setting the target on the semester GPA and forgetting that the warning follows the cumulative one.
- Leaving the failed course to the end of the plan. At Jouf a repeated course keeps the higher grade, and the lower one becomes "pass without grade", outside the GPA.1
- Waiting for the third warning before seeing an advisor. The academic advising guide lists what to bring to the first meeting.
- Asking for an extra chance without first checking the points your university demands.
