How the absence rate is worked out
- Course contact hours = hours a week × teaching weeks. A 3-hour course over 15 weeks has 45 hours.
- Absence rate = hours missed ÷ course contact hours × 100.
- The bar: once your absence goes past the limit (25% in King Khalid University's rules, for example) you cannot sit the final and you fail the course.
- Absence counts in hours, so missing a 2-hour lecture counts as 2 hours.
Warnings and lifting the bar
King Khalid University's published rules give a first warning at 10%, a second at 15%, and the bar once absence passes 25%. If absence is no more than 50% and the department accepts your excuse, the college council may lift the bar.
Each university sets its own limit and method in its regulations, so change the limit in the calculator if yours differs.
