By the tiswa editorial team, from the official sources listed at the end of this guide. How we write our guides
The teacher professional licence exam is offered by the Education and Training Evaluation Commission (ETEC) to in-service teachers and candidates entering teaching, with the Ministry of Education as the beneficiary. The licence has two tests: the General Educational Test and the Specialized Test in your subject. This guide covers what each test contains, the official numbers for questions, time, fees and validity, and how to study, all from the ETEC product page.
Who is it for?
Two groups: current in-service teachers and new candidates for teaching. Per the FAQs on the ETEC page, students about to graduate can also register. That matters for education students and majors whose graduates head into teaching: you can start early and enter the job market with your licence ready.
The two tests
It measures professional standards shared by all teachers, whatever the subject. Its three domains, per ETEC:
- Values and professional responsibilities.
- Professional knowledge.
- Professional practice.
Under these sit standards such as linguistic and quantitative skills, knowing the learner and how they learn, teaching methods, planning for learning, supportive learning environments and assessment. In other words, it asks how you would act as a teacher in real situations, not just for definitions.
It measures knowledge of your subject and how to teach it, and its domains vary by specialization. So your first step is to open the ETEC page, select your specialization and read its domains and standards.

| Week | General test | Specialized test |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Read the official standards and write them on one page | Read your specialization domains and standards |
| 2 | Values and professional responsibilities | First domain of your subject |
| 3 | Professional knowledge: the learner and teaching methods | Second domain |
| 4 | Professional practice: planning, environment, assessment | Third domain and subject teaching methods |
| 5 | Linguistic and quantitative skills, situation questions | Full review with questions |
| 6 | A two-hour timed practice test | A two-hour timed practice test |
Split study into short sessions as in the Pomodoro technique, and fit it around work or classes with time management apps. General study methods are in how to study effectively.
Handling classroom situation questions
Many general test questions are built on a classroom situation: a student who does not take part, a crowded class, a low assessment result, and a question on the best response. A practical method:
- Name the standard
Is it about professional values, knowing the learner, planning or assessment?
- Put the learner first
The option that respects learner needs and individual differences is usually closer to right.
- Drop the extremes
Options that punish at once or ignore the problem are rarely best.
- Pick the most complete
If two seem right, the better one usually treats the cause, not the symptom.
I am preparing for the Saudi teacher professional licence, General Educational Test. Its domains are values and professional responsibilities, professional knowledge and professional practice. Write 10 classroom situation questions with four options each, covering planning, learning environment, assessment and knowing the learner. No answers. After I reply, mark them and explain which standard each question measures and why the answer is best. State that the questions are practice, not official.
If you are about to graduate
The best time for the general test is often your final semester, while teaching methods, developmental psychology and assessment courses are fresh and field training gives you real classroom situations. Use your field training notes as study material: write down each situation, how you acted and which standard it links to. For the specialized test, regroup your course summaries by the ETEC domains of your subject rather than by course, and tools like NotebookLM for students can help you search them and generate questions.
After your result
Keep your result and its announcement date, since the five-year validity starts from that date. If you fall short on one test, do not restudy everything: find the weakest domain, give it two or three weeks of situation questions, then register for the next announced date.
Common mistakes
- Studying old summaries without reading the current standards on the ETEC page.
- Skipping linguistic and quantitative skills because they look easy.
- Registering a specialization that does not match your actual one.
- Memorising definitions without practising situation questions.
- Missing the cancellation window: 72 hours for paper, 48 for computer.
Before test day, check the exam day checklist. If you will apply for teaching jobs after the licence, tidy your CV with CV for students and prepare with job interview questions.
