Research methodology terms in Arabic and English: 65 terms from question to references

Research methodology terms in Arabic and English are needed at every stage of a graduation project, term paper or thesis: framing a research question, writing the method, analysing results and building the reference list. This guide lists 65 terms in five tables arranged by stage: research design, sampling and data collection, statistics, academic writing and references, and ethics and data management.

Universities sometimes phrase statistical and methodological terms differently. Treat your faculty guide and your supervisor as the final reference, and use this table to understand each term and compare the Arabic and English versions. If your study involves people or living beings, check the research ethics rules of the National Committee of Bioethics, which sets the regulations and accepts ethical review applications electronically. For earlier theses, the Saudi Digital Library hosts a repository of Saudi theses.

English termArabic equivalentExplanation
Research questionسؤال البحثThe specific question the study answers, and the one that guides every later step.

Dependent variableالمتغير التابعThe variable measured to see the effect of the independent variable.
Control variableالمتغير الضابطA variable kept fixed or monitored so it does not affect the result.
Confounding variableالمتغير المربكAn unplanned variable that affects both measures and creates a false link.
Experimental designالتصميم التجريبيPlan that sets how participants receive the treatment and when the effect is measured.
Control groupالمجموعة الضابطةGroup that does not receive the intervention, for comparison.
Experimental groupالمجموعة التجريبيةGroup that receives the intervention or the independent variable.
Case studyدراسة الحالةIn-depth study of one case or a few cases in their real context.
Qualitative researchالبحث النوعيResearch that explores meaning, experience and context, using words and interviews.
Quantitative researchالبحث الكميResearch that measures phenomena with numbers and analyses relationships statistically.
Mixed methodsالمناهج المختلطةCombining qualitative and quantitative data in one study to strengthen the findings.

Sampling and data collection

English termArabic equivalentExplanation
Populationمجتمع الدراسةAll the individuals or units the researcher wants to generalise to.
SampleالعينةThe part of the population from which data is actually collected.
Random samplingالعينة العشوائيةSelecting people so that each has a known chance of being chosen.
Convenience samplingالعينة المتيسرةChoosing people who are easy to reach, which limits generalisation.
Stratified samplingالعينة الطبقيةDividing the population into groups, then sampling within each group.
Sample sizeحجم العينةThe number of participants needed for a reliable result.
QuestionnaireالاستبانةWritten set of questions that participants answer.
SurveyالمسحCollecting data from many people with a questionnaire or structured interview.
InterviewالمقابلةGuided conversation the researcher holds with a participant to collect views and experience.
Focus groupمجموعة النقاشGroup discussion moderated by the researcher on a set topic.
ObservationالملاحظةWatching behaviour or a setting and recording it in a structured way.
Pilot studyالدراسة الاستطلاعيةSmall trial before the full study, to test the instruments.
ValidityالصدقHow well an instrument measures what it was designed to measure.
ReliabilityالثباتHow consistent the results are when the measure is repeated in similar conditions.

Statistics and interpreting results

English termArabic equivalentExplanation
Descriptive statisticsالإحصاء الوصفيSummarising data with averages, percentages and charts.
Inferential statisticsالإحصاء الاستدلاليDrawing conclusions about a population from a sample, with stated uncertainty.
Meanالمتوسط الحسابيSum of values divided by their count.
MedianالوسيطThe middle value once the data is ordered.
ModeالمنوالThe most frequent value in a data set.
Standard deviationالانحراف المعياريMeasure of how spread out values are around the mean.
CorrelationالارتباطStrength and direction of a relationship between two variables. It is not proof of cause.
RegressionالانحدارModel that estimates how one or more variables affect another.
P-valueالقيمة الاحتماليةProbability of a result this extreme if the null hypothesis were true.
Significance levelمستوى الدلالةThe threshold the researcher uses to reject the null hypothesis, often set at 0.05.
Confidence intervalفترة الثقةRange likely to contain the true population value at a stated confidence level.
Effect sizeحجم الأثرSize of a difference or relationship in practical terms, not only statistical significance.
BiasالتحيزSystematic error that pushes results in one direction.

English termArabic equivalentExplanation
Literature reviewمراجعة الأدبياتOrganised account of earlier studies, what they found and what remains open.
Systematic reviewالمراجعة المنهجيةReview that follows set steps to search, select and appraise studies.
Meta-analysisالتحليل التلويStatistical combination of results from several studies into one estimate.
AbstractالملخصShort summary of the aim, method and findings of a study.
MethodologyالمنهجيةDescription of how the research was carried out, from sample to analysis.
Limitationsقيود الدراسةFactors that restrict the accuracy or generalisability of the findings, stated honestly.
Delimitationsحدود الدراسةBoundaries the researcher sets for the scope, such as time, place or population.
Reference listقائمة المراجعList of every source cited in a standard format.
Citationالاستشهاد المرجعيIn-text reference to a source that was used.

How to learn these terms

  1. Write your research question first

Before memorising anything, write your question and hypothesis if you have one, then return to the table to see which terms apply.

  2. Sort the terms by stage

Place each term under the chapter where you will use it: proposal, methodology or results.

  3. Apply five terms to your study

Write a short paragraph on your method using at least five terms, then review it with your supervisor.

  4. Review by recall

Two days later, rebuild the table from memory. Active recall and spaced repetition explains why this works.

4-step flow: Write your research question first / Sort the terms by stage / Apply five terms to your study / Review by recall

If you are starting a proposal, read how to write a research proposal before the full list, since the terms make most sense once you know what you need. For the review chapter, the literature review explains structure and sources.

If you rely on AI tools to find studies or analyse data, read AI for research papers first. Tools can invent references that do not exist, so check every source in a reliable database.

Research sits at the heart of several majors. If you are studying psychology, public health or economics, look at psychology, public health and economics to see how research is done in each field.

Questions

Are these terms required in my thesis?

No, but your university may set a thesis style guide. Follow that guide and your supervisor terms, and use the table to understand and compare.

What is the difference between a confounding variable and a control variable?

You deliberately hold a control variable fixed or monitor it. A confounding variable affects the result without you planning for it. Good control prevents the second.

Does statistical significance mean the result is important?

No. It means the result is unlikely to be chance under the threshold the researcher set. Practical importance is judged separately, often with effect size.

Is a small sample acceptable?

In qualitative work it can be, once saturation is reached. Quantitative work usually needs a larger sample for the planned analysis. Ask your supervisor what is appropriate for your field.

How do I avoid plagiarism?

Cite every idea taken from someone else, and credit the source even when you paraphrase it. [Avoiding plagiarism](blog/avoid-plagiarism/) sets out the practical rules.

Can I use AI to draft a questionnaire?

You can use it for a first draft, but review every question with your supervisor, check that it measures what you need, and do not upload data to tools your university does not permit.
