# YouTube Premium Student in Saudi Arabia: who qualifies, what you get and how to join

> **The short answer**: YouTube Premium Student is available in Saudi Arabia, according to YouTube Help, for students at a higher-education institution that SheerID approves. You verify once, re-verify every year and keep the student plan for up to 4 consecutive years. It includes ad-free YouTube, background play, downloads and YouTube Music Premium.

> tiswa lists the current student offers in Saudi Arabia for [YouTube](https://tiswa.app/en/deals/youtube-premium/) and [Google AI](https://tiswa.app/en/deals/gemini/).

**Key takeaways**

- Saudi Arabia is on YouTube's list of locations that offer the student membership.
- SheerID, not YouTube, decides whether your university qualifies.
- Cancel an active paid Premium plan before you join the student one.
- Renewal opens in the last 30 days of each membership year. Miss it and you pay full price.

## Does Saudi Arabia have a student discount on YouTube Premium?

Yes. YouTube Help lists Saudi Arabia among the locations where the student membership is offered, and the regular Premium and Premium Lite plans are sold here too.[^3] The student membership covers YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium together; Music Premium on its own has a student version as well.[^1]

We quote no riyal price here. The price you pay is the one the checkout screen shows your account, next to the individual plan, so compare the two on that screen before you confirm.

## Who is eligible for YouTube Premium Student?

YouTube Help sets the conditions out plainly:[^1]

- You are enrolled at a higher-education institution in a location where the student membership is offered.
- Your institution is approved by SheerID, the company that runs verification for YouTube. SheerID makes that call, not YouTube and not you.
- No paid Premium membership is active on the account, or you cancel it first.
- You pass the check again every year.

The second condition decides most cases. King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah and Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University in Dammam are large institutions, but we have no list of the Saudi universities SheerID accepts, and we would not trust anyone who claims to. The only real test is typing your university's name into the verification form.

## What does YouTube Premium Student include?

| Background play | Videos keep playing with the screen off in the YouTube, YouTube Music and YouTube Kids apps |
| Downloads | Videos and playlists saved to watch offline; Smart Downloads adds recommended videos for you |
| YouTube Music Premium | Included: ad-free and offline music |
| Not included | YouTube TV, Primetime Channels, channel memberships and NFL Sunday Ticket |

Downloads matter most in exam weeks. Recorded Blackboard lectures are not on YouTube, but the tutorial playlists your instructor sends are, and they play on the bus or in a dorm with weak Wi-Fi.[^4] Podcasts in YouTube Music can still carry ads.[^4]

Premium Lite is the cheaper tier. It removes ads from many videos, such as gaming and news, but keeps them on music, Shorts, search and browsing, and it does not include YouTube Music Premium.[^5] If you only watch tutorials, Lite covers you. If you study with music on, it will not.

## How do I sign up for YouTube Premium Student?

1. **Check your current plan**: Open youtube.com/purchases (Purchases and memberships) and see whether a paid Premium plan is active. If it is, cancel it first: YouTube Help requires that before the student plan.[^1]
2. **Open the student page**: Go to youtube.com/premium/student, signed in to the Google account you will keep after graduation, not one you share with a sibling.
3. **Find your university**: In the SheerID form, type the official English name of your university, then try the Arabic name. If neither appears, stop. There is no way to force a match.
4. **Upload proof if asked**: If SheerID asks for a document, upload a recent enrolment letter or a student card showing the current semester, issued by your university's deanship of admission and registration.
5. **Pay and note the date**: Add a payment method, check the price on screen, and set a phone reminder 11 months out for the yearly re-check.

For each SheerID rejection message and what to do about it, see [YouTube Premium student verification in Saudi Arabia](https://tiswa.app/en/blog/youtube-premium-student-verification/).

## How long does YouTube Premium Student last?

Up to 4 consecutive years, with a fresh verification each year.[^1] YouTube sends a reminder near the end of each membership year, and once you are less than 30 days from your student status expiring, you can start the renewal. Both dates sit on youtube.com/purchases.[^2]

Graduate, or let the re-check slide, and the membership does not stop. It moves to a full-priced membership automatically.[^2] Plenty of people only spot that on a card statement.

## Does the student plan cover postgraduates, expats and students abroad?

YouTube writes the rule about the institution, not the person: you must be enrolled at a SheerID-approved higher-education institution in a location that offers the student membership.[^1] The page says nothing about nationality or degree level. A master's student at King Saud University and an expat undergraduate at Umm Al-Qura University go through the same check, and SheerID's list decides both.

A Saudi student on a scholarship abroad is asking a different question: is the university there approved, and is the student membership offered in that country? Diploma students at a technical college fall under the same rule. If the institution appears in the form and the documents pass, you qualify; if not, there is no side door. Do not verify with a classmate's documents. The check repeats every year, and the plan falls away at the first review.

## Can I pay for YouTube Premium through Zain, or join a family plan?

Zain is listed in YouTube Help as a partner provider in Saudi Arabia, so you can pay for Premium on your Zain bill, but only for an individual membership, not a family plan.[^6] That is a way to pay, not a student discount. The student price only comes through SheerID.

## Is YouTube Premium cheaper with Google AI Pro for students?

Google sells students a bundle of Google AI Pro with YouTube Premium. Its Arab-world student announcement lists up to 75% off Google AI Pro and 70% off the AI Pro and YouTube Premium bundle.[^8] The bundle runs on the same rhythm as the YouTube plan: SheerID re-verification usually every 12 months, for up to 4 consecutive years, or the offer lapses. It needs a personal @gmail.com account, and university accounts are not eligible.[^7]

University students in Saudi Arabia aged 18 and over have a separate offer, a free year of Google AI Plus, covered in [Gemini free for students](https://tiswa.app/en/blog/gemini-free-for-students/). They are different plans, so check which one your account holds before you pay twice.

## What do students get wrong with YouTube Premium Student?

- Trying to sign up while an individual Premium plan is still active, then hunting for a student option that never appears.[^1]
- Verifying on a Google account shared with a sibling. The membership stays with that account.
- Retrying SheerID for days with new spellings of the university name. If it is not approved, spelling will not fix it.
- Ignoring the yearly reminder email until the plan moves to full price.[^2]
- Paying for the student plan on top of a Google bundle that already includes Premium.

For verification problems, YouTube Help sends students to SheerID support at customerservice@sheerid.com.[^1]

> **tiswa's take**: tiswa's take: take the student plan if you study with music on or watch long tutorials on your phone, because background play and downloads are what you are paying for. If all you want is lecture videos without ads, compare Premium Lite on the same checkout screen first. Either way, put the re-verification date in your calendar the day you join.
