# Perplexity AI for research: how to use it for papers without citing it

> **The short answer**: Perplexity AI is a research tool that searches the web and answers with numbered sources you can open and check, which makes it good for starting a university paper, not finishing one. Research mode reads hundreds of sources into one report, and verified students get Education Pro at a discount. Cite the original source, not Perplexity.

**Key takeaways**

- Every answer carries numbered links to its sources. Open them before you use a fact.
- APA Style says to cite the source you read, not the AI that found it.
- Uploads top out at 40 MB per file.
- Learn mode appears once SheerID has verified you as a student.

## How does Perplexity work for research?

It interprets your question, searches the web in real time and compiles the most relevant findings into one answer, with numbered citations that link to the original sources so you can verify a claim or read further.[^1] Follow-up questions in the same session keep the earlier context,[^8] so you can narrow a topic question by question without explaining it again.

> **Tip**: The small number after a sentence is its source. Open it and read the paragraph the claim came from. The context often says something narrower than the summary.

## Search vs Research vs Learn: which mode for which job?

| Mode | What it does | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Search | A fast answer with sources | A definition, a fact, the name of a study |
| Research | Dozens of searches, hundreds of sources, one full report[^2] | Mapping a whole topic before you outline |
| Learn | Step-by-step explanations with questions, hints, flashcards and quizzes[^3] | Understanding course material and revising |

## Is Perplexity AI deep research free?

Yes, with a cap. The help center says free users get limited access to Research and subscribers get more, and that limits refresh on a rolling basis as older queries age out of the window, not on a fixed date.[^2] Finished reports export to PDF or a document, or become a shareable Page for your group.[^2] So do not spend Research runs on questions Search answers in seconds. Keep them for the day you map the topic.

Research mode prompt:

```
I am writing a literature review on [topic] for [course] at [university].
I need a report that covers:
1. Core definitions.
2. The key studies published since [year], with the year and main finding of each.
3. Points of disagreement and gaps in the research.
Use peer-reviewed journals and official sites, and link every claim.
```

## Should I cite Perplexity in my references?

Usually not. APA Style says that if you used AI as a search engine to find information, the way you would use Google or a library database, you generally do not cite the AI at all. You cite the original sources you quoted or paraphrased, after reading them.[^7] The same guidance asks you to visit and read every source the AI names, to make sure it is real and not made up.[^7]

The exception is a thesis or systematic review that describes its search strategy. There you say you searched with an AI tool, name it and reference it.[^7] Formatting for each reference is in our [APA citation guide](https://tiswa.app/en/blog/apa-citation/).

## What is Learn mode, and who gets it?

Learn mode is built for active learning. Instead of handing you the answer, it explains step by step, asks questions, gives hints and builds flashcards and multiple-choice quizzes from your notes.[^3] For now the toggle appears only for students who have verified their status, as a Learn icon among the search modes.[^3]

## Does Perplexity AI have a student discount?

Yes. Education Pro is offered to verified students and educators at a discount, with verification through a third party, SheerID.[^5] The help center names no country exclusions and gives no price in riyals, so check the price on the upgrade screen in your own account before paying.

1. **Open the upgrade screen**: Click Upgrade in the bottom-left corner of the app.[^5]
2. **Switch to Education**: Toggle to the Education plan, then click Verify as student.
3. **Verify with SheerID**: Use your .edu.sa address or any other email. It does not have to match your Perplexity login.[^5]
4. **Wait for approval**: The plan only shows once SheerID approves. If you are rejected, you cannot use Education Pro for now.[^5]

![4-step flow: Start with questions, not writing / Open every source / Cite the original / Write in your own words](https://tiswa.app/assets/blog/perplexity-for-research/perplexity-for-research-inline-1-en.webp)

Write down which account you redeemed on. Because the SheerID email can differ from your login, students lose track of where the plan went.

## How large a file can I upload to Perplexity?

Up to 40 MB per file, for every file type.[^4] It accepts text, code, PDFs and images, audio such as MP3 and WAV, and video such as MP4 and MOV, and it transcribes speech into searchable text.[^4] An hour-long lecture recording will usually blow past the limit as video and fit far more easily as MP3. The free plan has practically unlimited basic searches, very few Pro Searches and limited uploads.[^6]

Ask your lecture file:

```
Using only the attached file:
1. Summarise the main ideas in seven points.
2. List the key terms with a one-sentence definition each.
3. Suggest five likely exam questions.
If something is not in the file, say so.
```

## How do I judge a source before I use it?

A link is not proof that a source suits a university paper. Run every source past four questions:

| Question | Strong source | Weak source |
|---|---|---|
| Who wrote it? | A researcher, an official body or a university | Anonymous, or a commercial site |
| Where was it published? | A peer-reviewed journal, or a government site such as the Ministry of Education or GASTAT | A personal blog or a forum |
| Does it cite references? | Yes, and you can follow them | Nothing behind the claim |
| Does it fit your question? | Same topic and context | Another country or another decade |

If a strong source only summarises a study, go to the study. Your university's access to the Saudi Digital Library and the library's own databases is where the real reading happens once Perplexity hands you the first lead, alongside [Google Scholar](https://tiswa.app/en/blog/google-scholar-guide/).

## Example: from a broad question to a report outline

Say your environmental science lecturer at King Abdulaziz University wants 2,000 words on desalination in the Kingdom. Start broad in Search to learn the vocabulary, then pick one angle that fits the length and ask a narrower question that requests official and peer-reviewed sources. Save the useful ones in a single file with a line on why each matters. Run Research once, to check you have not missed a major study, then write the outline yourself from the sources you have read.

> **tiswa's take**: Our view at tiswa: use Perplexity for the first hour of a paper only, to learn the vocabulary, the researchers' names and the studies that keep coming up. Then close it and work from the sources. If your graduation project is in a health or engineering field, skip the open web and start in the peer-reviewed databases, because general results in those fields fill up with commercial articles.

## Mistakes students make with Perplexity

- Pasting the answer into the report instead of treating it as a starting point.
- Listing Perplexity in the references instead of the original source.
- Stopping at the first answer without follow-ups that narrow the topic.
- Mixing studies from different countries or decades without saying so.
- Uploading course files to an account other people share.
- Copying a number or percentage without opening its source, which is the first thing a supervisor checks.

> **Tip**: End every session with one question: which sources disagree with this finding? It does more for your discussion section than any other prompt.
