# Bridging program in Saudi Arabia: from diploma to bachelor's, and the conditions universities set

> **The short answer**: A bridging program in Saudi Arabia lets a diploma holder finish a bachelor's in a continuation of their field without starting from year one. Each university sets its own rules: Umm Al-Qura, for example, asks for a GPA of 4.00 out of 5 and a diploma no older than five years, with applicants aged 40 or under.

**Key takeaways**

- Every guide we read requires the bachelor's to continue the diploma's field.
- Umm Al-Qura refuses diplomas older than five years.
- King Khalid ranks 50% GPA and 50% comprehensive exam, with a minimum exam score of 60.
- Imam Abdulrahman requires an English test, plus employer approval for employees.

## What is a bridging program in Saudi universities?

The undergraduate study and examinations regulation calls it the "academic upgrade programme (bridging)", designed to take a student from a diploma to a bachelor's. It lets each university council approve bridging programmes under rules set by the Council of University Affairs[^1]. So the regulation opens the door, and each university decides whether to offer a programme, in which majors and on what terms.

The same regulation also describes exit points: some bachelor's programmes award a diploma to a student who completes a set part of the plan and stops[^1]. The road now runs both ways, which matters if you left a bachelor's halfway.

## What are the bridging conditions?

The numbers differ by university, but the same conditions recur. These are Umm Al-Qura's, from its Deanship of Admission and Registration[^3]:

- Saudi nationality, or a Saudi mother.
- A diploma from an institution recognised by the Ministry of Education.
- A GPA of 3.00 out of 4.00 or 4.00 out of 5.00.
- No more than five years since the diploma.
- Aged 40 or under.
- A matching major, with at least 20% of the plan creditable.
- No disciplinary dismissal, and full-time study.

Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University calls it "academic upgrading". It wants a university diploma of at least two years and a minimum GPA set per programme: 3 out of 5 or 2 out of 4 in some, and 3.75 out of 5 or 2.75 out of 4 in business administration[^5]. It adds an approved English test (IELTS, STEP or TOEFL), employer approval for employees, and full-time study on campus[^5].

## How are bridging applicants ranked?

King Khalid University's guide gives the clearest numbers we found[^2]:

| Item | What the guide says |
|---|---|
| Minimum GPA | 3.00 out of 5 or equivalent |
| Choices | One, a continuation of your major |
| Comprehensive exam | At least 60 to enter ranking |
| Composite score | 50% GPA, 50% comprehensive exam |
| Application date | Does not affect nomination |
| Fees | Fee-paying; nomination is cancelled if fees are not paid on time |

![Comparison card of the guide table](https://tiswa.app/assets/blog/bridging-programs/bridging-programs-inline-2-en.webp)

A worked example with those weights: a GPA of 4.20 out of 5, rounded to 84%, and 76 in the exam. Composite = (84 × 0.5) + (76 × 0.5) = 80%. The exam weighs as much as your GPA, so skipping revision costs half your score. The conversion here is for illustration; use a [GPA calculator for your diploma](https://tiswa.app/en/blog/gpa-calculation/) and check the university's own method.

## How many years does bridging take?

That depends on your diploma's length and the exemptions granted. Under King Khalid's guide, a student admitted with a two to two-and-a-half-year diploma is exempted from levels one to three and from university requirements, then studies the rest of the plan[^2]. At Imam Abdulrahman, study takes two and a half to three and a half years depending on the programme[^5].

## Is an associate nursing degree good for bridging?

Yes, but health bridging has heavier conditions. Umm Al-Qura's health colleges ask for a science high school certificate, a health diploma of at least two years, IELTS 4 or above, and a valid professional classification from the Saudi Commission for Health Specialties[^4]. Imam Abdulrahman adds at least two years of work experience for its health programmes[^5]. If your classification has lapsed, renew it before the portal opens.

## Can I study in Saudi Arabia while working on a bridging program?

Not on the programmes we read. Umm Al-Qura requires full-time study[^3], and Imam Abdulrahman requires full-time attendance and employer approval[^5]. An employee needs study leave in writing before applying. If you cannot leave work, look at a distance bachelor's instead.

## Can non-Saudis and private institute graduates apply?

It depends on the university, which is why you read the guide by name. King Khalid accepts Saudis and holders of a valid residence permit[^2]; Umm Al-Qura and Imam Abdulrahman want Saudi nationality or a Saudi mother[^3][^5]. A resident with a diploma should start with universities that name residence in their conditions.

Graduates of private institutes licensed by the Technical and Vocational Training Corporation face one more hurdle in King Khalid's guide: passing the corporation's own comprehensive exam, before the department's[^2]. That is two exams, so plan time for both. And if you already hold a bachelor's, you do not need bridging at all: the regulation allows a second bachelor's under each university's rules[^1].

## What mistakes get bridging applicants rejected?

- Applying to a major that does not continue the diploma, the most common rejection.
- Waiting so long that Umm Al-Qura's five-year window closes.
- Sitting the comprehensive exam unprepared, when it is half the score at King Khalid.
- Forgetting the English test for English-taught programmes.
- An expired professional classification in health majors.
- Missing the fee deadline after nomination, which cancels the seat[^2].

Bridging is not only shorter. You join an advanced level alongside classmates who have studied together for three years, and you start on major courses in week one with no introductory semester to warm up. Revise your field's basics before the first term, especially if two or more years have passed since your last exam.

> **tiswa's take**: Our view at tiswa: apply in the first two years after your diploma, even if you are settled in a job. Some windows are five years, work makes them pass quickly, and full-time study gets harder every year. If you want a different field from your diploma, bridging is the wrong route; apply afresh through [unified admission](https://tiswa.app/en/blog/unified-admission/).

## How to apply for bridging, step by step

1. **Confirm the continuation**: Read the list of accepted diploma majors for each programme in the university's guide.
2. **Convert your GPA to their scale**: Out of 4 or out of 5.
3. **Prepare documents**: ID, diploma certificate and transcript, English test, employer approval, and professional classification for health majors[^5].
4. **Apply on the university portal**: At Imam Abdulrahman through its bridging admission system; elsewhere through the admission deanship portal. King Khalid accepts no paper applications[^2].
5. **Prepare for the exam and interview**: Ask for the published exam references and revise your diploma's core courses.
6. **Pay and confirm the seat**: Before the deadline on fee-paying programmes.

## Questions

### How long does a bridging program take?

Two and a half to three and a half years at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University; the length follows your diploma and the exemptions granted.

### What GPA do I need for bridging?

4.00 out of 5 or 3.00 out of 4 at Umm Al-Qura, and 3.00 out of 5 in King Khalid's guide. Each university publishes its own figure.

### Is bridging free?

Not always. King Khalid's programmes in its guide are fee-paying, so read your university's guide first.

### Can I study a bachelor degree in Saudi Arabia in a different field after a diploma?

Not through bridging; the major must continue the diploma. A different field means applying afresh through unified admission.

### Is an associate nursing degree enough for nursing bridging?

It is the starting point. Umm Al-Qura's health colleges also want IELTS 4 and a valid Saudi Commission for Health Specialties classification.

### Can I do a bridging program while working full time?

Not on the programmes we read: Umm Al-Qura and Imam Abdulrahman require full-time study and attendance.
